Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer resigns

Heyneke Meyer will not seek to renew his Springbok coaching contract beyond its current period‚ meaning he has effectively resigned as Bok coach.

Meyer’s contract ends on December 31 and he will no longer be the Springbok coach in 2016.

After a difficult 12 months that saw the Boks lose to Argentina and Japan and also fail to win the World Cup‚ Meyer has decided to call it quits.

“My integrity has always been very important and I feel I can leave with my head held high‚” Meyer said in a statement.

“Thank you to the countless faithful‚ positive and passionate supporters that have made my job as coach a joy.”

As Bok coach Meyer was in charge for 48 games‚ winning 32‚ losing 14 with two draws for a 66.7 winning percentage.

The South African Rugby Union announced today that Meyer had advised it that he “no longer wished to be considered as a candidate to coach the Springboks”.

"Meyer decided to stand aside as coach‚ a decision he considers to be in the best interest of SA rugby‚ following recent developments‚" South African Rugby announced via Twitter.

The national rugby team has just lost two major sponsors with Absa and BMW pulling out.

The Boks took third place at the 2015 World Cup‚ but the campaign included a shock loss to minnows Japan before the Boks were beaten 20-18 by eventual champions New Zealand in the semi-finals.
