THE DA has lambasted the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for not using 19 traffic motorcycles it bought in 2010 to beef up law enforcement on the roads.
The bikes, which cost about R2-million, are stored at the Sidwell Traffic Roadworthy Centre, according to DA councillor and party spokesman for safety and security Gustav Rautenbach.
He said yesterday (09/04/15) he had recently visited the centre and found the bikes covered in dust and some with expired licences, clearly not in use.
“This is a total waste of money and resources. It is totally unacceptable and the DA will be addressing this as a matter of urgency,” Rautenbach said.
Municipal safety and security head Shane Brown said the bikes were used occasionally to provide motor escorts.
“However, we are looking at providing additional training to our staff to ensure they are used more frequently,” he said.
