A group of about 30 men suspected to be members of the EFF dismantled the Horse Memorial where Cape Road meets Russell Road in Port Elizabeth on Monday (06/04/15).
Police were quick to respond but only arrived at the scene after the statue, erected in memory of animals that died during the Boer War, was damaged.
According to bystanders, a group of about 30 men dressed in red vandalised the statue before jumping into cars and racing away. Police are searching for the suspects.
This comes after three men, believed to be affiliated to the EFF, attempted to burn a war memorial statue situated in Uitenhage’s market square on Thursday.
The Uitenhage incident received global media coverage.
Lobby group Afriforum has called for all heritage statues and monuments to be placed under 24-hour surveillance.
