Replace library statue with tribute to exiled hero Stuurman, metro told

KHOI leaders in Port Elizabeth have joined the Rhodes Must Fall Campaign and are also demanding the removal of the imposing marble statue of Queen Victoria in front of the city’s Main Library.

They want it replaced by one of their forgotten chief, David Stuurman.

They blame the British monarch for Stuurman being sent to Australia.

The call comes hot on the heels of city politicians who made renewed moves at the weekend for the removal of all monuments and statues reminiscent of colonialism and apartheid.

These are parts of countrywide protests spearheaded by University of Cape Town students who have demanded the removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue.
