Feared gang leader freed

Ngcala, sentenced to two life terms and 212 years, released on parole

THE leader and mastermind of one of the Eastern Cape’s most deadly gangs has been released on parole after serving only a fraction of two life sentences and an additional 212-year sentence.

Notorious gang leader Mncedisi Ngcala, who headed the Ngcala gang, made headlines between 1988 and 1999 when the gang pulled off several sensational bank and cash-in-transit robberies in the province, resulting in the murder of several people.

Ngcala, who is from Motherwell, still holds the record for the highest number of armed robberies – mainly bank and cash-in-transit robberies – in the Eastern Cape.

Now aged about 60, Ngcala was at the time also ranked as the province’s most dangerous criminal.

His parole was granted by Justice and Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha in November last year, but it is believed he was only released last month.
