Hero in Greenacres robbery puts marathons on hold
INSTEAD of preparing for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons, the hero cop who was shot during a shootout with armed robbers in the Greenacres shopping centre last week is nursing an injury that will see him out of action for at least a few months.
Warrant Officer Werner Meyer, 41, of Mount Road police station, was shot in the leg during the mid-morning shootout with an armed gang that robbed Fischer’s Jewellers at the busy Port Elizabeth shopping mall on Thursday.
Speaking about the robbery for the first time yesterday, a modest Meyer – who is an avid athlete – said he had simply been in the right place at the right time.
“I am not a hero. I was merely doing what any good police officer would do,” he said, looking at a bullet wound above his left ankle.
“I actually went to the [centre] while on my way to visit a school.
“I am the sector manager so I go to all the various schools in my area to consult with the principals and address any concerns they have.”
