FOR a 170-year-old, The Herald showed unwavering party stamina when it hosted Nelson Mandela Bay guests to celebrate the beginning of the newspaper’s milestone anniversary year with a vibrant banquet on Friday night.

The elegant 170th birthday party at the Boardwalk attracted a veritable who’s who of metro personalities. It was an evening filled with glitz and glamour attended by about 300 people.

Distinguished guests included the master of ceremonies, celebrated author, actor and playwright Dr John Kani; former Bay mayor Nceba Faku, business chamber chief executive Kevin Hustler, businesswoman Hlubi Hewitt-Coleman and Missionvale’s Sister Ethel Normoyle.

The snazzy event started with a moving welcome by Kani, who said he was honoured to be part of the evening as a “son of Port Elizabeth”, recalling how, as a child, he would often be handed interesting clippings from The Herald by his mother.
