NELSON Mandela Bay’s political head of safety and security, councillor Thembinkosi Mafana, has dismissed claims that he posed as the mayor and signed a mysterious agreement with the Chinese on behalf of the municipality.
ocial media has been abuzz with allegations that Mafana and head of research in the chief whip’s office Xolani Mgxotheni visited Fuzhou in 2013, with others, and pretended to be the mayor and city manager, respectively.
They allegedly committed to a friendly relationship with the Chinese. The heated debate on Facebook was prompted by a photograph posted by an EFF national leader, Thembinkosi Rawula, about a week ago.
In the photo, Mafana appears to be signing a document, with Mgxotheni and several Chinese nationals around him and a banner in the background, which reads: “Signing ceremony for the letter of intent on the establishment of [a] friendly relationship between Nelson Mandela Bay and Fuzhou.”
