The granting of additional privileges to killer Oscar Pistorius in prison has been criticised by the family of his murdered girlfriend, former Port Elizabeth model Reeva Steenkamp.
Steenkamp’s uncle, Mike Steenkamp, was reacting to Pistorius’s prisoner category having been elevated .
Steenkamp said yesterday: “Clearly the Correctional Services Department has a short memory [of what Pistorius did].
“Our system is working in such a way that if they grant these things, they must think he is a model prisoner.”
Pistorius’s recent prisoner category upgrade means:
He may now have contact visits;
He may have a radio in his cell;
He may wear jeweller
He is allowed to make 24 phone calls annually, instead of the six calls he has been allowed;
He can now take up a hobby; and
His prison allowance is raised from R100 to R150.
Pistorius was imprisoned four months ago in Pretoria’s Kgosi Mampuru II jail after he was sentenced to five years for the negligent killing of Steenkamp two years ago.
While he is scheduled for possible release in August, which will see him placed under house arrest, an appeal by the state against both his conviction and sentence could scupper this.
Pistorius’s uncle, Arnold Pistorius, said they knew an appeal would be lodged “even before Oscar went to prison”.
Gauteng Correctional Services spokesman Ofentse Morwane said policy prevented him from commenting on Pistorius’s prisoner category change.
“This is applicable to all offenders. It’s important to note the classification of sentenced offenders is done and reviewed periodically by the case management committee in all correctional centres,” Morwane said.
