Shaun Ah Shene and his wife held after nine-year investigation by special units

In what has been described as a breakthrough in the war against gangsterism, nine years of legwork culminated in the arrest of the suspected leader of Nelson Mandela Bay’s oldest gang and his wife, who handed themselves over to the Hawks organised crime unit yesterday.

Shaun Ah Shene, 49, and his wife, Virginia, also 49, were arrested following the lengthy investigation into the Ah Shene Gang, more commonly known as the Chinas.

The probe involves undercover agents, informer intelligence, and years of investigating how the suspected top hierarchy of the gang operates.
