Abuse of council freebies slammed

alcohol-492871_640Nelson Mandela Bay councillors who drag uninvited relatives and friends along to municipal events and run up a high bar tab are creating a massive headache for officials and event organisers.

Not only are the councillors allegedly abusive when demanding free tickets from staff for events hosted or sponsored by the municipality, some spend the entire time hogging the bar instead of listening to the speeches.

This has prompted the ANC to propose that no alcohol be served at functions – to deter thirsty, uninvited guests.

At a sports, recreation, arts and culture portfolio committee meeting yesterday, Summer Season events organisers Soul Good complained about the persistent problem of abuse of the hospitality area at their events.

Soul Good project manager Darren Mungur said some councillors brought up to 11 extra people with them.
