Residents of Nelson Mandela Bay townships could soon have free internet access after the Swiss government and the metro signed an agreement yesterday on the roll-out of a multimillion-rand street lighting and Wi-Fi project.
The high-mast lighting project is already being piloted in Port Elizabeth’s Walmer township.
Mayor Ben Fihla signed a memorandum of understanding with Switzerland’s environment, energy, transport and communications federal councillor, Doris Leuthard, who led a high-powered delegation to the city. They committed to engage further with the metro before investing a still to be established amount towards the mass roll-out of the project.
The signing at the Port Elizabeth City Hall yesterday, also witnessed by Switzerland’s ambassador Christian Meuwly and mayoral committee members, will see the Swiss pumping millions into the project, which is also expected to be implemented in other townships.
