‘Uphold Xundu legacy’

Church has vital role to play in keeping government accountable, says bishop

With corruption costing South Africa billions of rands, the church had to work harder to keep the government accountable, renowned Anglican Bishop Bethlehem Nopece said in Port Elizabeth yesterday.

It should also lead the way in finding solutions to social problems crippling national development, he said.

Nopece was speaking to thousands of mourners at the funeral of Anglican canon and anti-apartheid struggle hero Mcebisi Xundu in New Brighton’s Nangoza Jebe Hall.

Among those in the packed hall were some of the country’s most powerful leaders – cabinet ministers, senior politicians and labour and business people – who had come to celebrate the life of a man described as a peacemaker, a sharp negotiator and a visionary.
