Father, toddler pepper-sprayed.
What started out as a normal day of shopping for a Mount Croix family at the Greenacres shopping centre in Port Elizabeth turned into a nightmare involving an alleged attempted assault, a car chase and an 18-month-old girl being pepper-sprayed in the face.
Self-employed web designer Justin de Klerk, 37, took his wife, Mei, and two children – Ivony, 18 months, and Caleb, seven weeks – to Greenacres on Wednesday.
While walking through the parking area towards the Mugg & Bean entrance, De Klerk said he was clipped by an armoured Fidelity vehicle while holding Ivony.
The infuriated De Klerk shouted at the driver, demanding an apology.
When the Fidelity vehicle stopped about 10m away, De Klerk approached the passenger window still holding Ivony. As he bent over the guard allegedly pepper-sprayed the pair before driving off.
