High-powered delegation will name task team.
Today is D-day for the ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay as President Jacob Zuma returns to install a new batch of leaders he hopes will finally put the brakes on the party’s unprecedented slide in the Eastern Cape’s biggest city.
A closely guarded secret among the ANC’s provincial and national leadership, several insiders said the list of names of the regional task team to be announced this weekend was the subject of much debate among party bosses.
This is because it is the ANC’s final shot at winning back public confidence ahead of an unpredictable municipal election next year. Today Zuma, deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte and treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize are expected to first discuss the proposed list at City Hall around lunchtime.
Later in the day, their provincial counterparts led by chairman Phumulo Masualle will join the discussion and thereafter the rest of the provincial executive committee.
The new regional task team (RTT) will be announced to ANC branches tomorrow morning.
The highly anticipated team’s job will be to rebuild branches and recruit new members to the party.
One insider said a number of names proposed this week by the provincial leadership had been rejected by national bosses.
