A CHANCE meeting between suspected rival gang members near one of Port Elizabeth’s busiest shopping centres erupted into a gunfight yesterday, leaving one man critically wounded and causing extensive traffic congestion.
The shooting victim, a Gelvandale man, 21, whose identity was not released by police yesterday, was shot in the head and the legs and was in a critical condition in Livingstone Hospital last night.
Chaos broke out behind the landmark Greenacres Shopping Centre, close to the adjoining Bridge Shopping Centre, when the suspected rival gang members, travelling in two separate cars, happened to stop alongside each other at a traffic light.
The incident took place shortly before 1pm at the Ring Road intersection with CJ Langenhoven Drive, which motorists use to exit the shopping centre parking area.
