FURIOUS Malabar residents and business owners have vowed to take on the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality after a lengthy power outage led to a massive spoilage of perishable goods.
Two faulty electricity cables in Malabar caused power outages in the lower section of the suburb and parts of Gelvandale from noon on Monday.
Residents were told electricity would be restored by 6pm last night but by the time of going to print the power was still out.
The power failure saw one fruit wholesaler forced to toss out thousands of rands, worth of perishable stock and homeowners suffering huge losses from food that had spoilt in their fridges and freezers.
They believe the municipality should be liable for their financial losses.
“We cannot tolerate this, it’s unacceptable,” resident Nizaam Reddy said.
“Who is going to compensate us for our losses? We need to teach the municipality a lesson.”
