Leaders, residents put faith in prayer

NEW Brighton residents, concerned at a recent spate of shootings in the area, have decided to fight fire with fire – unleashing the power of God at a prayer session in one of the church buildings in the violence-plagued township.

More than 500 people, including church leaders, business people, politicians, taxi owners and police – gathered at the Church of Umzi waseTiyopiya in Aggrey Road yesterday to pray for peace following a series of execution-style killings in what allegedly started out as a gang turf war.

The initial venue for the prayer session was the township's hub, Embizweni Square, but the cold, windy weather saw it moved indoors to the church building. - Zandile Mbabela
