Uproar over nuclear ships docking in SA

A VAGUE public notice about the transport of "yellowcake" uranium oxide, a material used to manufacture nuclear fuels, through South African ports – including Nelson Mandela Bay – has set off alarm bells with anti-nuclear groups in the country.

Earthlife Africa objected to a notice placed in various newspapers – including The Herald – a month ago to inform the public of NTP Logistics' application to transport radioactive and nuclear goods via South Africa.

"The notice failed to state what kind of goods and what levels of radiation are involved. There was also no mention of specific harbours or whether the goods will actually be leaving ships or not," Earthlife Africa coordinator Muna Lakhani said. - Riaan Marais
