I am sorry, drunk driver tells dead man’s family

A DRUNK driver who crashed into and killed a Port Elizabeth cyclist on a Sunday morning before fleeing held back tears yesterday as he apologised to the victim’s family.

Andre Gouws, 28, of Walmer Downs, said he had matured in the past 17 months and was not the same person who climbed behind the steering wheel after binge drinking for almost 24 hours.

Gouws, an IT technician, pleaded guilty in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court to culpable homicide, driving under the influence of alcohol, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and failing to ascertain injuries.

Gouws was driving along Kragga Kamma Road at about 8am on October 7 2012 when he smashed into Mill Park businessman and father Clem Morris.
