Citizens can still register to vote

President Jacob Zuma announced 7 May 2014 as the election date last Friday, but he has not yet proclaimed the date, which means the Voters' Roll is still open.

The weekend of 8-9 February 2014 was the last registration weekend. However, voter registration will continue until the date of the official proclamation of the election by the President and the Premiers, towards the end of the month.

The Presidency has received enquiries from members of the public who still wish to register.

Potential voters that missed the past weekend's final voter registration can proceed to register at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) offices located in every municipality in South Africa.

They must make an appointment to apply for registration at their local IEC office during office hours. They must always phone first to make an appointment.

South Africans must apply for registration on or before the day that the upcoming election date is proclaimed (published in the Government Gazette) by the President, after which the Voters' Roll is closed for that specific election. No date has been set as when the proclamation will be issued and gazetted, but it is expected that this will happen before the end of February 2014.

By law, they must apply in person (no online or email registrations are permitted). They must please bring their valid green, bar-coded ID book,  smartcard ID or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC).
