Lions roar in log war

THE battle lines have been drawn in the Safa-NMB SAB League after Lion City thrashed Central Acemates 4-1 in the Nedbank Cup finals played at the NU9 Stadium on Sunday.

City are chasing neighbours Subs for the league title.

In the opening match of the season Subs thrashed City. Since then, both teams are unbeaten, with Subs topping the log and City in third place behind Callies.

The log leaders bounced back from their first defeat of the season in all competitions when they lost in the first round of the Nedbank KO Cup a fortnight ago and their draw against Island City last week to thrash Despatch Pioneers 4-0 after leading 1-0 at the break in a Safa-NMB SAB League fixture.

Athi Latile, Awive Venge and Siya Tsana added to the first-half strike by Vuyasani Masumba.

Subs play Royal Bucks at the NU2 Stadium on Saturday. Tomorrow Stars picked up their first points of the season in the league when they thrashed Sunrise Development 6-1 at the NU2 Stadium on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a goal on either side of the break helped Lion City beat Peace United and retain third spot.

Anathi Katangana gave City a 1-0 lead at the break. Vuyani Klaas put United on level terms in the second half but a lapse in concentration saw Mayibongwe Maseti net the winner.

Weekend fixtures:

Callies v Tomorrow Stars (Westbourne Oval), Showvillage United v Morning Stars (NU2), Lion City v Camper United (NU2), Hotspurs v Fairview Rovers (Moore Dyke), Highland Spurs v Peace United (Jabavu), Island City v Central Acemates (Uitenhage Central), Subs v Royal Bucks (NU2), Despatch Pioneers v Motherwell Academy (Khayamnandi).
