GELVANDALE resident Mario Lewis, 20, has been bowling for the past five years and has been receiving numerous awards ever since.

Lewis started playing bowls in 2008 and held the champion title at the Gelvan Bowling Club for two years (2011-2012). "A teacher at my school, Sherine Booysen, and a coach from NMMU, Constance Dix, taught me how to bowl and they showed me the basics to be as good as I am at bowling now," Lewis said.

In 2009, Lewis was selected to play in the SAB inter-districts in George and was also the runner up in the U-19 Eastern Province singles division. The following year he was selected to play in Mpumalanga. In 2011, Lewis was the winner of the U-25 Eastern Province singles and also the runner-up of the Eastern Cape Masters match-up against Border.

Later in 2011, Lewis was selected again to play in the Eastern Province Masters.

"I am so glad that I have put so much effort into my practising and I am really glad it has paid off," he said.

Lewis was selected this year to play in the U-25 inter-districts, however it was called off because some of the players were unable to attend.

"Mario has a lot of potential and he is passionate about what he does.

"Everyone at the bowling club is very impressed with him," Mike Vaghmaria said.
