Identifying land for building

Ask your councillor -

WARD 11 COUNCILLOR ISAAC ADAMS

Housing

There are various pockets of vacant land where the Zosa Street type of units could be built (about 600). This land has been lying vacant since the area was developed over 60 years ago. I, together with Councillor Roberts (Ward 7) and Councillor Von Buchenroder (Ward 10) and the executive of the backyarders, held numerous meetings at the Jarman Hall with the community and have invited officials to give input as to how this land could be freed up for this purpose. Each time it is the same old excuses and I have now forwarded this plan, indicating exactly where these units could be built, to the acting-executive director of Human Settlements, Kosalin Naicker.

Illegal Dumping

There is illegal dumping taking place at the corner of Highfield Road and Cottrell Street, as well as the corner of Searle Road and Neave Street and the corner of Thornton Road and Gelvan Street.

Waste Management regularly cleans up the area, only for some residents to again use these spaces to dump their garbage. Some community members have come forward with names of residents dumping and I have written numerous letters to the guilty parties explaining the consequences of their actions and that they could be fined R2000 in line with the by-law. Waste Management at the Gail Road depot were copied with these letters and they have been very supportive by getting the town ranger, Cassim, to visit these people to give them a warning. However, we need to do some form of educating the community to change their mind-set. It was further suggested at our waste forum meetings that we need to look at an alternative plan of collection to once and for all stop this illegal dumping.

Taverns

There are approximately 28 legal/illegal taverns in Schauderville, with most of them not conforming to the requirements. This issue gets raised at various crime indabas and one of the most critical points is that the Liquor Board and the Metro’s Human Settlement directorate need to interact prior to the decision taken by the Liquor Board to grant/reject the application of a licence.
