A nine-year-old caused a stir at the Port Elizabeth International Airport at about 12.30pm yesterday after the police bomb squad was called in to assess the status of his abandoned bag.
The arrivals terminal was briefly evacuated after the boy forgot his bag in the terminal.
The bomb squad was called in to evaluate whether the bag presented a threat.
Airports Company of South Africa spokeswoman Senzeni Ndebele said: “The abandoned bag belonged to a nine-year-old. The police bomb squad was called in to check the contents of the bag. Only a small part of the airport had to be evacuated.
“The boy returned with his family to collect the bag and were given a warning . . . Airport operations were not affected.”
