A mother and her two young children were evacuated from their Richmond Hill flat yesterday after a fire broke out.

The fire, which started on the third floor, caused thousands of rands worth of damage to household goods.

The blaze began inside the Las Palmas block at about 12.30pm while neighbours and passers-by watched helplessly.

Laurens Coetzee, 80, a resident of Las Palmas for the past three years, said he was busy hanging washing on the line at the back of the block when he heard a woman shouting about a fire.

“I noticed smoke billowing up in the air and it emanated from the third floor.

“The window glass was blown out by the flames,” he said.

“Firefighters managed to gain access to the flat. Fortunately, the blaze was restricted to the third floor only.”

Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said: “It would appear something was lit in the bedroom from where the fire started.

“However, we managed to contain the blaze from spreading to other flats.

“We are investigating the cause.”
