WATCH: Fires rage in Eastern and Western Cape

Firefighters were still battling raging wildfires in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route as well as the Thornhill area in Kouga Municipality today.

The Port Elizabeth weather office released this satellite picture of the Knysna fire and Patensie/Thornhill fires from 8pm last night. The scale of both fires can be seen on the satellite image.

Bitou municipal spokesman Howard Swartz said evacuations were under way at Solar Beach in Plettenberg Bay due to fire spreading fast in that direction. Various houses have been reported to be be alight. All Plettenberg Bay schools have also been closed for the day.

More than 200 people were evacuated to the Thornhill Community Hall due to the raging fires in the area, the Kouga Municipality said last night.

Fires were still raging in the Longmore, Van Stadens Gorge and the Lady Slipper area early this morning.
