Areas of Plett evacuated, schools close as fires continue to rage

George Municipality has confirmed that five GO GEORGE buses have been sent to Plettenberg Bay today to help evacuate residents threatened by the fires that have raged out of control in that area since yesterday.

On Thursday morning (08/06/17) Bitou municipal spokesman Howard Swartz said evacuations were under way at Solar Beach due to fire spreading fast in that direction. Various houses have been reported to be be alight.

All Plettenberg Bay schools have also been closed for the day.

All emergency services are doing their utmost under the current circumstances. The current rain is assisting with containing fires.

The Whale Rock area and the end of Longships towards Robberg was also evacuated and residents in the Schoongezicht and Brackenridge estates have been urged to be on high alert.

Swartz urged residents in Plettenberg Bay to refrain from using the roads as traffic made it difficult for emergency services to operate.
