Family, friends left stunned after Union High old boy dies after struggle with burglar
A Karoo family is mourning the loss of their son, who was shot dead during a robbery at his commune in Bloemfontein. Sean Kroon, 18, a first-year BSc engineering student, was shot during a struggle with an armed gunman who had broken into his flat on Saturday night.
His laptop and cellphone were stolen.
Kroon’s family live in Willowmore and he matriculated at Union High School in Graaff-Reinet last year.
He was alone in the flat in Universitas during the robbery.
Police spokesman Captain Chaka Marope said two gunshots were fired during the struggle between the two.
“He [Kroon] wrestled with the suspect and, in the process, was shot in the chest and upper arm,” he said.
Kroon stumbled outside and screamed for help, but collapsed and died outside the building.
Kroon’s cousin, Amy-Lee Kroon, 18, who matriculated with Sean last year, said his family and friends were still in shock.
