Car theft syndicate uncovered

Police suspect they have uncovered a Port Elizabeth-based vehicle theft syndicate after a man appeared in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court.

Andile Mboyi, 26, appeared on Tuesday after he was arrested at a house in Vakaza Street, New Brighton, on Sunday morning.

Police found 17 metal data plates, with vehicle identification numbers (VIN) and chassis numbers of stolen vehicles, as well as a stolen bakkie and a Nissan Sentra parked at the house.

The bust came after Flying Squad officers followed a car travelling from Kwazakhele to Vakaza Street.

The Sentra was found outside the house and later identified as being stolen.

Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said police then searched the man’s house and found the 17 metal car plates hidden in a compartment inside a wall.
