Additional police have been deployed along Victoria Drive in Walmer following a shock attack on 2015 Ironman South Africa champion and 2013 Ironman world champion Frederik van Lierde, of Belgium, while he was training in Port Elizabeth.
Police spokeswoman Priscilla Naidu said the suspects were still at large.
While confirming the extra police on the road where the attack happened, Naidu could not say exactly how many more had been deployed.
Van Lierde, 37, was cycling in preparation for this Sunday’s Ironman in Port Elizabeth when he was attacked by four thugs just before 4pm.
He was hit on the head and robbed of his iPhone 7 and sunglasses.
Hours earlier, recreational cyclist and newcomer to Port Elizabeth Leon Killian, 57, was also mugged by a group of five men on the same stretch of road.
“At Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, we were disappointed to hear about the crime which has affected the Ironman and the athletes visiting our destination,” the organisation’s chief executive, Mandlakazi Skefile, said.
“We will endeavour to work with security and all stakeholders to ensure we host a safe Ironman.”
