A KFC outlet near Shark Rock Pier along the Port Elizabeth beachfront was robbed by a lone gunman late on Tuesday night.
This is one of several recent incidents where robbers have stormed a business and held staff hostage shortly after closing.
The KFC incident happened at 10.30pm while the manager was cashing up.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said the gunman had entered the shop wearing a hoodie that covered his face.
“He told the teller to lie on the ground and then confronted the manager,” he said.
“The suspect demanded the day’s takings and also forced them to unlock the safe. The safe was opened and the suspect fled.”
