Shelters for homeless proposed

Concerned that vagrants in Port Elizabeth’s city centre are making it impossible for the municipality to keep the streets clean, councillors want research into the possibility of providing overnight shelters for the homeless.

The recommendation came from councillors in the municipal public accounts committee yesterday while drafting an oversight report to be tabled in council.

In the report, the committee said: “A concern was raised regarding vagrants who were identified as a challenge in respect of cleansing services due to their permanent presence in the streets.

“Research must be conducted to identify noble ways to assist vagrants in Nelson Mandela Bay by providing shelters and other required services.”
