A SECURITY official aged 26 is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s court today on a charge of attempted murder.
It is alleged that on March 16, at about 20.30pm, Sgt Thembile Gaba from the Port Elizabeth K9 Unit attended to a robbery complaint in Galpini Street, Summerstrand.
According police spokeswoman Col Priscilla Naidu, the suspects ran through the bushes and Gaba, accompanied by his dog, followed the trail which led towards the Driftsands reservoir.
“A private security official and the officer saw a guardhouse on the premises and noticed that someone was inside.
“The police official identified himself and beckoned to the guard to open the door.
“He refused and as the officer attempted to open the door, the guard fired a shot at him. The officer sustained a shotgun wound to his right shoulder,” Naidu said.
Gaba was admitted to St George’s Hospital for treatment.
Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga has implored officers to remain resolute in the performance of their duties and to be vigilant.
