Antenatal health guru and Greenacres Village resident Helen Ward, 60, was at the supermarket on Tuesday evening when she heard a crack of thunder – but it was a lot closer to home than she thought.

“It was between 5.30pm and 6pm,” she said yesterday.

“I had just popped out to Woolies when I heard a loud bang, but I didn’t think anything more about it.”

After driving back to her Greenacres Village complex she discovered the electrics on the outside gate had failed and she had to roll it back manually.

At her unit, Ward realised she also did not have any electricity – and then she spotted a pile of rubble next to her home’s wall.

“I looked up the wall and there was a gash right through the bricks extending down from the roof about 1.5m,” Ward said.

“It was then that I realised my house had been hit by lightning and that was the bang I heard back at the store.
