Despite a water crisis as dam levels plummet and occasional gale-force winds, Nelson Mandela Bay firefighters have managed to suppress more than 1 000 fires this summer bush fire season.

The season, which ends next month, has seen thousands of hectares of bush damaged and hundreds of residents evacuated in the 1 003 recorded fires.

These included overnight fires which threatened to engulf wedding venues and homes in the Theescombe area and a fire that brought a city together to fight the flames when animals and elderly people were threatened in Lorraine.

Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said the metro was pleased there had been no injuries or deaths in the fires.
