Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has cancelled classes at three of its campuses for Wednesday after raging veld fires in Summerstrand overnight affected large parts of the campuses.
NMMU spokeswoman Zandile Mbabela said the North, South and CSIR campuses were affected.
“Students were evacuated out of the Sanlam Student Village, where the fire had got dangerously close, and returned when the fire was extinguished,” she said.
“Firefighters worked through the night trying to contain the fire. Fortunately nobody was hurt.”
It is believed the fire in the 720ha nature reserve started at about 8pm on Tuesday. Firefighters brought it under control, but it flared up again at about midnight.
Mbabela said the situation was being monitored for any possible flare ups.
