A man has been killed and two suspected shooters arrested in the latest gang related shooting in Port Elizabeth’s northern areas.
Alex-Nico Ferreira, 28, of Extension 29 in Bethelsdorp, was found lying in a pool of blood next to a VW Golf in Bantam Street, Bethelsdorp, shortly after 5pm on Tuesday.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said fast response by Visible Gang Intervention Team who were in the area at the time of the shooting led to the arrest of the suspected shooter.
She said police officials were patrolling in the area when they responded to a call of a shooting at Bantam Street.
“A white VW Golf was parked in front of a house. The community pointed to an open field where the suspect was seen running. The members searched the area between Bosch and Bardien Streets. Backup was requested when a group of gang members was spotted nearby,” she said.
“As police approached them, one person started running but was arrested by pursuing officers. The suspect was found in possession of a firearm. The area was thoroughly searched and a second firearm was recovered. The suspect is affiliated to the Preston Shaw Boys Gang.”
Naidu said the second suspected gunman being identified and arrested while standing among the other gang members.
“The motive for the shooting and murder of Ferreira remains unknown but will be established during the investigation,” she said.
“Police confiscated a 45mm calibre firearm and a 9mm calibre firearm with ammunition. Both firearm’s have been sent to the ballistic unit to establish where they come from and if they have been involved in other shootings.”
One suspect was detained on a charge of murder while the other was detained for murder, illegal possession of firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
Both men are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
