WATCH: ‘The case is going to collapse’ – Lungisa on assault charges

Two Nelson Mandela Bay ANC councillors facing charges of assault will attend a pre-trial conference on August 23, the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court heard on Wednesday morning.

Luthando Ngqakayi, the lawyer for Andile Lungisa and Gamalihleli Maqula, said there was no prospect of a mediation between his clients and the DA councillors they allegedly assaulted last year.

Lungisa and Maqula face charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm following a council brawl in October, during which councillor Rano Kayser was hit over the head with a glass jug and DA chief whip Werner Senekal stabbed in the back with a sharp object.

Addressing a crowd of ANC supporters outside the court, Lungisa rubbished the charges, saying the state's case would "collapse".
