An elderly man who disappeared after attending a “spiritual session” in Hankey at the weekend has been found.

Police spokeswoman Captain Gerda Swart said Peter Grootboom, 84, went missing in the Rooiwal area on Saturday.

“The search for the missing elderly man was done with the assistance of the Search and Rescue team, the local community and the PE Airwing who conducted an aerial search,” Swart said.

The search was suspended due to bad light and rough terrain on Tuesday and resumed early on Wednesday.

Grootboom was found at about 11.20am on Wednesday – about 1.5km from where he was last seen.

“Fortunately he only had a few minor scratch marks and he was taken immediately for medical treatment,” Swart said.

“The Humansdorp Cluster Commander, Brigadier John Lebok, thanked all the roleplayers involved for their assistance in ensuring the safe return of the man and he was reunited with his family.”
