Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille is offering a R25 000 reward for information on the cause of fires that ravaged the city in January.

Addressing the year’s first council meeting on Thursday‚ De Lille said she wanted to know the cause of fires which affected areas from Somerset West to Simon’s Town‚ and including Vredehoek on the edge of Cape Town’s city bowl.

“I would like to therefore extend a reward of R25 000 for information which leads to the apprehension of any person initiating or aiding the spread of the fires that have affected the city‚” she told councillors.

She said it was unfortunate that most fires were still being caused by carelessness or being set deliberately.

Since December‚ city firefighters had been called to 3 166 incidents‚ said De Lille.
