Four men tied up an 85-year-old woman after breaking into her house in Morningside, Port Elizabeth, on Thursday night.
This was one of two reported but separate robberies in which people were attacked in their homes in Port Elizabeth in the 24 hours up to early yesterday.
The first attack happened in Colin Street, Morningside.
Police spokesman Captain Johan Rheeder said the woman was believed to have been attacked in her home at about 9pm on Thursday.
The four suspects fled only at about 2am yesterday.
“The men held her hostage and tied her up inside the house,” he said.
“The suspects assaulted her and managed to break open the wall safe and steal the contents.” Her house was also ransacked. “The police were only alerted at about 6am. The woman is in shock and traumatised. Detectives are still attempting to gather all the details.”
Rheeder said it was unknown how the men had gained entry.
