Robber killed in heist shootout

A robber was killed and another wounded during a gunfight with Queenstown police.

Police Colonel Clifton Keys said the shootout took place at 4pm on Wednesday when three gunmen entered Sterns Jewellers in Cathcart Road, Queenstown.

“The police received a call to an armed robbery. They met three men, aged between 30 and 40, on their way out of the shop,” he said. A shootout ensued. “Two men were shot. One died on the scene . . . the other was injured,” he said. One of the robbers escaped.

“Police recovered two unlicensed firearms, jewellery and cellphones to the value of R300 000,” he said.

The detained man is under police guard in hospital and will be formally charged in court.
