Water usage in Nelson Mandela Bay dropped 6% in the first month since restrictions were applied on August 31.
Infrastructure and engineering head councillor Annette Lovemore applauded residents for their efforts.
“As awareness of the water restrictions increases in the next two months, we trust we will achieve the 15% saving demanded by the minister of water,” she said.
“The municipality has, unfortunately, not yet reduced the average number of leaks reported, or the turnaround time in attending to these leaks.”
A total of 6 268 pipe bursts and leaks had been reported in the past three months.
The municipality planned to address priority areas in this budgetary process, she said.
