The situation at Rhodes University was very tense on Monday morning as a small group of students tried to push for a national campus shutdown over student fees.
There wasa strong presence of public order police on campus and they were shadowing the group of students‚ some of whom had covered their faces.
Concerned staff‚ students and even local clergy wearing white sashes with the word “peace” written on them were following the group to try and prevent any confrontation with police.
Some lectures have been disrupted and university property vandalised.
There was a reported attempt to burn a bridge on St Peters campus. The bridge leads to the law faculty‚ which has been adamant about lectures proceeding. Often two lecturers do door duty at lecture venues‚ while a third lectures.
