Police and security personal have been warned to be extra careful when responding to complaints in Port Elizabeth after an alert was issued about criminals planning to use ambush tactics in a bid to steal more firearms.
The warning comes amid concerns that criminals are going after firearms to beef up their arsenals.
Three incidents involving attacks on officials for their firearms have occurred this week alone, with four pistols and a shotgun stolen.
In July, seven firearms were taken in attacks on law enforcement officials in Nelson Mandela Bay.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said as a precautionary measure, all police and security officials were told to be vigilant when responding to crime calls.
