While President Jacob Zuma was addressing 1 500 local and international delegates attending the 17th World Federation of Trade Unions Congress in Durban yesterday, striking University of Zululand workers tried to force their way into the high-security venue.
Frustrated by a court interdict preventing them from protesting inside the campus, about 90 workers, affiliated to National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union, took their fight to the international stage.
However, a swift negotiation with the security personnel and Cosatu averted a potential embarrassing situation.
The group was told to go to Cosatu’s Durban head office for a meeting with S’dumo Dlamini and Mzwandile Makwayiba, presidents of Cosatu and Nehawu, respectively.
Zuma was not made aware of the protest at the Durban International Convention Centre.
The Unizulu workers are striking for an increase and insourcing, among others.
