An off-duty police constable from Algoa Park was robbed of his state firearm by two gunmen who marched into his home wearing balaclavas.
The constable, who works at the Algoa Park police station, was at his Ysterhout Street home with his family when the gunmen entered through an unlocked door at about 1.30pm yesterday.
Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said: “They clearly knew that he was in the police. The men only demanded the firearm which was locked away in his safe.
“The officer complied with their instructions and unlocked the firearm safe,” she said. “The men stole the firearm with 15 rounds of ammunition.”
In a separate robbery at 6.30pm in Cleeve Street, Cotswold, two men gained entrance to the house of a mechanic by pretending that their car had broken down.
They threatened him with a knife and firearm and stole an unknown amount of money from his safe before fleeing.
