NMMU student released on bail

An NMMU student who was arrested on Monday morning after allegedly blocking the road leading to NMMU north campus with tyres and then setting them alight has been released on R200 bail.

Student Mpumzi Ndsonde, 22, appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court where he was charged under the Criminal Matters Amendment Act on Monday afternoon.

The new legislation aims to allow the courts to impose harsher sentences to those who damage or vandalise essential infrastructure – such as roads.

Ndsonde is due to reappear in the same court on December 22.
