Times Media’s 2016 local government elections web application and its brand-new Wanted Online website were in the spotlight on Thursday night at the inaugural Digital Media Africa Awards held in Sandton‚ winning best data visualisation project and best new product‚ respectively.
The awards‚ organised by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-Ifra)‚ celebrate innovation in digital publishing and are presented in regions including Africa‚ Asia‚ Europe‚ Latin-America‚ the Middle East and South Asia. Regional winners compete for the World Digital Media Awards‚ to be held in Austria in October.
The Times Media elections app allowed readers to follow in real time the drama of August’s local government elections. Along with interactive maps‚ news and past election data‚ it included a unique “battlefields dashboard” that monitored the key political contests in Nelson Mandela Bay‚ Johannesburg‚ Tshwane and elsewhere while the votes were being counted.
In just one week during the elections the app attracted more than 200 000 readers who wanted to keep up with the political intrigue.
